As the Principal Technical Specialist for Manning & Automation, you will lead the development of innovative ship automation technologies aimed at optimizing crew sizes and improving operational awareness in naval settings. In your role, you will manage and execute research projects related to automation, system integration, digital twinning, and decision support systems. Your knowledge will be vital throughout the various stages of shipbuilding projects, from design to implementation.
Key Responsibilities
Leading a team of specialists in technology, ensuring smooth collaboration during the research, design, proposal, and engineering phases of shipbuilding projects.
Providing expert guidance in the fields of automation and systems engineering to ensure the optimal performance of advanced vessels.
Leading and supporting verification and validation trials during production and warranty stages.
Conceptualizing and driving the development of new automation solutions to meet emerging requirements and promoting their adoption.
Offering expert advice on project planning, including defining activity lists and manhour estimates.
Creating and reviewing essential deliverables such as functional descriptions, calculations, simulations, technical specifications, and testing/validation protocols.
Participating in design reviews and contributing to the ongoing improvement of internal processes and tools.
Engaging in automation design and requirements engineering activities with subcontractors during the early engineering phase.
Specifying, developing, and testing integrated mission management systems.
Ensuring seamless integration of hardware and software products to maintain compatibility.
Assessing the performance of new technologies during the design, engineering, production, and commissioning phases.
Working as a key member of project teams, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Striving for highly standardized and modular automation solutions by defining adaptable, off-the-shelf components for easy integration.
Consulting on new builds and retrofitting projects, providing expertise in updating Manning & Automation strategies.
Maintaining strong professional relationships with industry partners, research institutions, and the Navy, actively contributing to Manning & Automation initiatives.
Je profiel
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant technical field, with a minimum of five years of experience.
Extensive and in-depth knowledge of specialized areas relevant to naval vessels or offshore structures.
Familiarity with agile software development methodologies, such as Scrum.
Expertise in the functional design of control and monitoring systems.
Proficiency with common IT architecture solutions used on vessels, including service-oriented cloud computing (virtualization, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
Experience with the latest trends in industrial automation, such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
Knowledge of the standards and regulations set by classification societies is an advantage.
Significant experience working on complex naval projects.
Proven ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with research institutes, universities, suppliers, and subcontractors.
A practical, independent, and customer-oriented mindset with excellent communication abilities.
Fluency in both Dutch and English, written and spoken.
Strong references, as a security screening will be conducted as part of the hiring process.
Permanent EU citizenship and passport are mandatory. Candidates with an EU (work) visa or with dual EU/non-EU nationality are ineligible due to project security requirements.
